Psalms 132:6

Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

Psalms 132:6 (KJV)

Psalm 132 is a song of ascents, sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem. It remembers King David’s deep desire to build a dwelling place for the Lord. Verse 6 speaks of hearing about something at Ephratah and finding it in the fields of the wood. Ephratah is another name for Bethlehem, David’s birthplace and ancestral home. The “fields of the wood” refers to Kiriath-jearim, a town whose name means “city of woods.” There the ark of the covenant rested after its return from the Philistines, as recorded in 1 Samuel 7:1-2.

The word “it” points to the ark of the covenant, the symbol of God’s presence among His people. The people heard about the ark at Ephratah, then found it in the wooded fields of Kiriath-jearim. This verse captures the journey of seeking and finding the ark, which David later brought to Jerusalem with great joy. The ark was not to remain hidden in an obscure place; it was to be honored in the center of worship.

Ephratah also connects to the Messiah. The prophet Micah foretold that the ruler of Israel would come from Bethlehem Ephratah (Micah 5:2), and the New Testament confirms that Jesus was born there (Matthew 2:1-6). Just as the ark was found in a humble, unexpected place, so Christ came in lowly circumstances. The ark was a type of Christ, showing that God’s presence would dwell among His people in a new and greater way.

This verse teaches that God’s presence may be found in unexpected places. The people did not rely only on what they heard; they went and found the ark for themselves. Believers today are encouraged to seek God personally, not merely to depend on the reports of others. God’s promises are fulfilled in His time, and His dwelling place is ultimately in the hearts of His people.

Consider how you seek God’s presence. Do you act on what you have heard about Him, or do you remain passive? The journey to find the ark required effort and obedience. In the same way, pursuing a deeper relationship with God takes intentional steps. Christ, born in Bethlehem, is the fulfillment of every promise, and He invites all who seek Him to find Him.
