Psalms 139:19

Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

Psalms 139:19 (KJV)

Psalm 139 is a prayer of King David that celebrates God’s complete knowledge, presence, and power. Earlier verses describe how God searches the heart and is present everywhere. Verse 19 turns from praise to a plea for justice, asking God to act against the wicked.

David declares, “Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God,” expressing certainty that God will judge evil. The word “slay” shows God’s judgment, not human vengeance. David does not take revenge himself but trusts God to act. Then he commands, “depart from me therefore, ye bloody men,” calling for separation from violent people. This reveals a desire for personal holiness and freedom from evil influence.

The Hebrew word for “wicked” is singular, possibly pointing to a specific enemy, yet the principle applies to all who oppose God. Because God is all-knowing, He sees the wicked; because He is everywhere, He is near to judge; because He is all-powerful, He can execute judgment. David’s confidence rests on God’s character, not on his own strength.

This verse fits the imprecatory tradition of the Psalms, where strong language expresses longing for God’s righteousness to prevail. It is not a license for personal hatred but a prayer for God to uphold justice. The call to separate from evil echoes the broader biblical theme that God’s people should be distinct from the world’s violence.

Believers can find comfort in trusting God’s ultimate justice, even when wickedness seems to prosper. The verse calls us to choose godly associations and distance ourselves from those who lead us astray. Rely on God’s constant awareness of our lives, and align with His righteous ways.

David’s confidence rests on God’s character. Because God knows all and is present everywhere, He will act rightly. We can pray for justice while keeping our own hearts pure, knowing the Creator sees every detail of our journey.
