Psalms 139:7

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

Psalms 139:7 (KJV)

Psalm 139 is attributed to King David. In this psalm, David reflects on God’s complete knowledge of him and God’s presence in every part of life. Earlier verses describe how God knows David’s thoughts and actions before they happen. This verse comes as a question that grows out of that wonder.

David asks where he could go from God’s Spirit or flee from God’s presence. The question is rhetorical. He is not looking for a way to escape. Instead, he is amazed that no such place exists. The Spirit of God means God’s active presence and power at work in the world and in the lives of believers.

The word “whither” means “to where.” David asks about any possible destination. The two lines of the verse say the same truth in different ways. God’s Spirit and God’s presence are not limited to one location. God is not confined by space or time. He is present everywhere at once.

This truth is called the omnipresence of God. It means there is no place, no situation, and no moment where God is absent. David understands that even if he tried to hide, he could not. The question shows both awe and humility before such a God.

The rest of Psalm 139 continues this thought. In Psalm 139:8-10, David says that even in heaven or in the depths of the sea, God’s hand would lead him and hold him. Those verses show that God’s presence is not only inescapable but also caring. His presence guides and supports His people.

This verse brings comfort to believers. No matter where we are, what we face, or how we feel, God is with us. We can rely on Him at all times. We can pray to Him in any situation, knowing that He hears and that He is near.

The verse also reminds us of accountability. Because God is present everywhere, nothing is hidden from Him. This should lead us to live honestly and to confess our sins, knowing that He sees all and yet loves us.

David’s question invites us to consider our own relationship with God. We are never alone or abandoned. God’s presence is with us every step of the way. This assurance can give us peace in difficult times and courage to face each day.

We can respond like David, not with fear but with trust. Because God is always present, we can draw closer to Him. We can rest in the knowledge that He knows us fully and still cares for us deeply.
