Psalms 139:6

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Psalms 139:6 (KJV)

Psalm 139 is a song of King David, who marvels at God’s complete knowledge of him. In the opening verses, David says that God has searched him and known him, understanding his thoughts from afar. This verse is David’s response to that truth. He does not try to explain God’s knowledge; he simply stands in awe of it.

David calls God’s knowledge “too wonderful” for him. The word “wonderful” here means extraordinary and beyond human ability. He then says it is “high,” like a mountain peak that no one can climb. Finally, he admits, “I cannot attain unto it.” David, a man after God’s own heart, confesses that God’s understanding is far above his own. This is not a complaint but a humble recognition of his limits.

God’s knowledge is not distant or cold. It is personal and caring. He knows our thoughts, our words, and our ways completely. This truth should comfort us, because the One who knows us fully also loves us fully. His knowledge is perfect and complete, and it is not merely factual but deeply intimate.

This verse connects with Isaiah 55:9, where God says that His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Both passages remind us that God’s wisdom is not like human wisdom. We cannot measure it or fully understand it, but we can trust it. The surrounding context of Psalm 139 also emphasizes God’s omnipresence and care, showing that His knowledge is not distant but personal.

  • Humility: We are not omniscient. This verse teaches us to approach God with reverence, admitting that we do not have all the answers.

  • Trust: When life is confusing, we can rely on God’s perfect knowledge. He sees the whole picture, and He knows what is best for us.

  • Worship: Reflecting on God’s infinite wisdom should lead us to praise Him. His greatness is worthy of our awe and adoration.

God’s knowledge is a mystery we cannot solve, but it is also a shelter we can rest in. We do not need to understand everything, because we know the One who does. Let this verse quiet our restless minds and turn our hearts toward trust and wonder. Even when we cannot grasp the depth of His wisdom, we can rest in the certainty of His care.
