Psalms 139:5

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

Context

Psalm 139 is a prayer of King David, who marvels that God knows him completely. In the verses just before this one, David says that God understands his thoughts and sees his ways (Psalm 139:1-4). Verse 5 then draws a conclusion from that truth: God surrounds him on every side. The Hebrew word translated “beset” means to enclose or hem in, like a city guarded by an army. David is not trapped; he is held securely by his Creator. This picture of being enclosed also shows God’s watchful care over every part of life.

Meaning

“Thou hast beset me behind and before” means that God is present in David’s past, present, and future. Nothing in his history is hidden from God, and nothing in his tomorrows is unknown to Him. The second half, “and laid thine hand upon me,” pictures a hand that guides, protects, and comforts. It is not a heavy hand of punishment but a caring touch that steadies and leads.
