Psalms 141:1

Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

Psalms 141:1 (KJV)

Psalm 141 is a lament or supplication attributed to King David, likely written during a time of distress. The opening verse sets the tone for the whole psalm, as David urgently calls on the Lord for help and protection.

David begins by addressing the Lord, acknowledging His authority and sovereignty. The word “Lord” shows David’s humble posture before God. He cries out, expressing deep emotional distress and complete reliance on God. David knows that human help is vain and that only the Lord can deliver him.

David’s request for God to “make haste unto him” reveals urgency and earnestness. He perceives himself in a desperate condition, unable to help himself. He longs for God’s immediate attention and intervention. David also asks God to “give ear unto my voice,” desiring God’s attentive listening. This shows his confidence that God hears the prayers of His people.

The repetition of “when I cry unto thee” emphasizes David’s persistence in prayer. He has been continuously seeking God’s help and is determined to keep crying out until he receives an answer. This persistence reflects a fervent, heartfelt prayer life.

David’s urgent cry echoes the pattern of other psalms where the psalmist calls on God in trouble. For example, Psalm 18:6 describes David calling to the Lord in distress, showing that crying out to God is a consistent biblical response to hardship.

Psalm 141:1 teaches us to approach God with reverence and humility. We can bring our deepest concerns and needs before Him, crying out in earnest. The verse reminds us of the urgency and importance of persistent prayer. When we face challenges, we can follow David’s example and turn to God, asking Him to act swiftly and listen to our petitions.

  • Approach God with reverence, acknowledging His authority.

  • Cry out to Him with urgency and honesty about your needs.

  • Persist in prayer, trusting in God’s perfect timing and attentive ear.

David’s prayer models a vibrant relationship with God. He does not hide his desperation but brings it openly before the Lord. In our own lives, we can rely on God’s loving care and provision. Through persistent prayer, we demonstrate our dependence on God and invite Him to work according to His will. God is the ultimate source of help, and He hears the cries of His people. This verse also highlights the personal and relational nature of prayer, as David directly addresses God with confidence in His power and mercy. The urgency and fervency of David’s cry serve as a model for believers, demonstrating the importance of persistent and heartfelt prayer in times of trouble.
