Psalms 141:9

Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity.

Psalms 141:9 (KJV)

Psalm 141 is a prayer of David, asking God for deliverance and protection from enemies. In this verse, David specifically requests to be kept from the snares and gins laid by the workers of iniquity. Snares and gins were traps used to catch animals or people, symbolizing the deceptive schemes of his adversaries. David faced real dangers, including Saul’s attempts to ensnare him and the betrayal of the Ziphites. These traps represent the cunning plans of the wicked.

David acknowledges his vulnerability and dependence on God. He recognizes that he cannot overcome these traps on his own. The plea is not for removal from all danger, but for God to keep him from falling into the traps set by the wicked. This reflects a heart that trusts in God’s sovereign protection while remaining aware of the dangers around him. Without divine intervention, he could easily be caught.

The imagery of snares appears throughout the Psalms. For example, Psalm 124:7 speaks of the snare being broken and the believer escaping. This connection shows that God is able to deliver His people from the traps of the enemy. The broader context of Psalm 141 includes a prayer for the heart to be guarded from evil, which links to the request for deliverance from the snares of the wicked. It is the Lord alone who keeps and preserves from these snares.

Believers face spiritual battles and encounter opposition. The snares and gins can represent temptations, false teachings, or the corrupting influence of evil examples. Like David, we are called to depend on God and seek His help when we face difficulties and spiritual attacks. Prayer is the means by which we bring our concerns and fears to God, trusting that He is our refuge. We can humbly rely on God for protection from both spiritual and physical dangers.

David’s example teaches us to rely on God’s faithfulness. Despite the dangers he faced, he was confident that God was his ultimate source of strength and safety. We can find comfort in knowing that God is our protector and that He will guard us from the snares of the enemy. This verse encourages us to humbly pray for divine safeguarding in a hostile world. It reminds us that God is sovereign and able to break every snare.
