Psalms 143:1
Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
Psalms 143:1 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 143 is attributed to King David and is classified as a penitential psalm. In this psalm, David is in deep distress and cries out to the Lord for help and deliverance from his enemies. The verse opens with an urgent plea: “Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications.” The parallel words “hear” and “give ear” show how intensely David longs for God’s attention.
Meaning
David addresses God as “LORD,” using the Hebrew name Yahweh, the covenant name of God. This name emphasizes the personal relationship David has with God and his trust in God’s faithfulness and goodness. David’s prayer is a supplication, a humble request made to God. He does not appeal to his own merit but to God’s character. “Faithfulness” (Hebrew: emunah) points to God’s covenant loyalty and reliability. “Righteousness” (Hebrew: tsedeqah) here is not mainly retributive justice but God’s saving righteousness, his commitment to act according to his covenant and to deliver the oppressed. Thus, David’s confidence rests not in his own worthiness but in who God is.
Biblical connections
This verse models a pattern of prayer: honest, urgent petition rooted in the character of God. It sets the stage for the rest of the psalm, where David cries out from distress and enemies, yet clings to God’s steadfast love and guidance. Theologically, this verse highlights the foundation of prayer: God’s character, not human merit. It also points forward to the ultimate expression of God’s faithfulness and righteousness in Jesus Christ, who is the righteous one and the faithful covenant keeper.
Application
When you find yourself in distress or facing challenging situations, follow David’s example by turning to God in prayer. Pour out your heart to him, knowing that he hears and cares for you. Cultivate a deep trust in God’s faithfulness by remembering his past faithfulness in your own life and in the lives of others. This will strengthen your faith and confidence in his ability to answer your prayers. Seek answers from God that align with his righteousness. Trust that his response will be just and in accordance with his perfect will, even if it may not align with your own desires.
Reflection
David’s plea teaches us that we can approach God with our deepest concerns, knowing that he hears us. We can trust in God’s faithfulness, just as he has been faithful to his people throughout history. God’s righteousness assures us that his responses to our prayers are always just and right. We can rest in the truth that his answers will align with his perfect character.
