Psalms 145:18
“The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
1. Context: Psalm 145 is attributed to David and is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God. This particular verse highlights the nearness of the Lord to those who genuinely seek Him.
2. The Nearness of God: The verse begins with the affirmation that “the Lord is nigh” or near. It emphasizes the closeness of God to His people. This nearness encompasses His accessibility, attention, and willingness to respond. It indicates that God is not distant or unapproachable but rather desires an intimate relationship with His creation.
3. Calling upon the Lord: The phrase “call upon Him” refers to the act of prayer and seeking God’s presence. It involves reaching out to God, acknowledging His authority, and seeking His help, guidance, or presence. Prayer is an essential means of communication and communion with God, allowing believers to express their needs, gratitude, worship, and repentance.
4. Calling upon Him in Truth: The verse further emphasizes the importance of sincerity and truthfulness in approaching God. It implies that God desires genuine worship and devotion from the heart. Calling upon God “in truth” involves sincerity, honesty, and authenticity in our relationship with Him. It requires aligning our thoughts, actions, and motives with His truth and seeking Him with genuine faith.
5. The Promise: The verse assures that God responds to those who genuinely seek Him. He is attentive to the prayers of His people and draws near to them. It is a promise of God’s presence and involvement in the lives of those who earnestly seek Him.
Applying the verse to our lives:
Psalm 145:18 encourages us to approach God with authenticity, sincerity, and truthfulness. It reminds us that God is always near and attentive to the prayers of His people. When we seek Him genuinely, aligning our hearts and lives with His truth, He promises to draw near and respond to our cries.
As believers, we are encouraged to cultivate a consistent and sincere prayer life, knowing that God is interested in our well-being and desires an intimate relationship with us. By seeking Him earnestly and truthfully, we can experience His presence, guidance, comfort, and provision in our lives.
Additionally, this verse reminds us to evaluate our motives in prayer and worship. It challenges us to examine whether our approach to God is genuine or merely superficial. God values sincerity and desires us to worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).
