Psalms 145:17

“The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.”

1. Context: Psalm 145 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God. It celebrates His greatness, goodness, and faithfulness. The verse in question, Psalm 145:17, highlights two key attributes of God: His righteousness and holiness.

The Righteousness of God: Righteousness refers to God’s perfect adherence to justice, fairness, and moral integrity. It means that God always does what is right and just. He is the standard of righteousness, and all His ways are in accordance with His perfect character. This verse affirms that the Lord is righteous in everything He does. As believers, we can trust in His justice and fairness.

The Holiness of God: Holiness describes God’s absolute purity, perfection, and separateness from sin. It denotes His moral and spiritual excellence. God is separate from all that is sinful and impure, and His holiness is unmatched. This verse declares that God is holy in all His works. Everything He does is characterised by His moral purity and perfection.

4. Application: Recognising God’s righteousness and holiness has practical implications for our lives as believers:

  • – Trusting in God’s righteousness: We can have confidence that God always acts in accordance with His perfect justice and fairness. Even when we face challenges or injustice in our lives, we can trust that God will ultimately bring about justice.
  • – Embracing God’s holiness: As followers of Christ, we are called to pursue holiness in our own lives (1 Peter 1:15-16). By acknowledging God’s holiness, we understand the standard to which we are called and seek to align our thoughts, actions, and attitudes with His character.
