Psalms 145:5
I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.
Psalms 145:5 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 145 is a psalm of praise written by King David. It is an acrostic composition, with each verse beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalm centers on praising God’s greatness, character, and works. In this verse, the psalmist declares his personal intention to speak of God’s glorious honour and wondrous works.
Meaning
The phrase “glorious honour of thy majesty” points to God’s greatness, splendor, and sovereign authority. The psalmist recognizes that God is the highest King, deserving of honor and praise. He does not keep this recognition silent; he commits to speaking it aloud. The “wondrous works” are the miraculous deeds of God recorded in Scripture, such as creation, the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. These works reveal God’s power and faithfulness.
Biblical connections
This verse connects with the wider call in Psalm 145 to praise God among the generations. The psalmist’s words also echo the New Testament teaching that believers should declare the praises of God who called them out of darkness into marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Speaking of God’s majesty and works is not only personal worship but also a witness to others.
Application
Praise and Worship – Like the psalmist, we should cultivate a heart of praise. Intentionally speaking of God’s glorious honour and recounting His wondrous works can be done through prayer, singing hymns, or sharing testimonies of His faithfulness.
Gratitude and Thanksgiving – Reflecting on God’s glorious honour and wondrous works should lead us to gratitude. By consciously acknowledging God’s blessings, provision, and intervention, we develop an attitude of thanksgiving that deepens our relationship with Him.
Witnessing and Evangelism – Sharing about God’s glorious honour and wondrous works provides a powerful opportunity for evangelism. Our personal experiences with God become tools to testify to His goodness and invite others to experience His love and salvation.
Reflection
Do our words regularly declare God’s majesty and wondrous works? This verse challenges us to make praise a deliberate habit, not just a feeling. When we speak of what God has done, our own faith is strengthened, and others are drawn to seek Him.
