Psalms 147:15

“He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly.”

Context of the Psalm:Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His care and restoration of Jerusalem. It highlights God’s power and provision, especially in gathering and protecting His people. This particular verse speaks of God’s sovereignty and the swiftness of His word.

God’s Sovereign Command:The verse begins by stating, “He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth.” This affirms God’s authority and power over creation. God’s commandments are His instructions or decrees that He sends forth to fulfil His purposes. It is a reminder that God is in control of all things and that His word carries weight and significance.

The Swiftness of God’s Word:The second part of the verse says, “his word runneth very swiftly.” This imagery portrays the rapid movement and effectiveness of God’s word. When God speaks, His word acts quickly and accomplishes its intended purpose. It highlights the power and efficacy of God’s spoken word, which is not hindered or delayed by any obstacles.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Sovereign Authority:Recognise and trust in God’s sovereignty over all things. He is in control, and His commandments guide the affairs of the earth.
  • The Power of God’s Word:Meditate on the power of God’s spoken word. His word is active, alive, and transformative (Hebrews 4:12). It has the power to bring about change, accomplish His will, and fulfil His promises.
  • Obedience to God’s Word:As believers, we should heed God’s commandments and align our lives with His Word. His instructions are for our benefit and well-being. Responding in obedience allows us to experience His blessings and favour.
  • The Importance of Speedy Obedience:Just as God’s word runs swiftly, we should respond promptly to His commandments. Delayed obedience can hinder the fulfilment of His purposes in our lives and in the world around us.

In summary, Psalm 147:15 reminds us of God’s authority and the swift action of His word. It encourages us to trust in His sovereignty, recognise the power of His word, and respond in obedience without delay. May we continually seek to align ourselves with His commandments and experience the blessings that come from following Him faithfully.
