Psalms 19:8

Listen to this article

“The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.”

This verse is from Psalm 19, which is a beautiful psalm attributed to King David. It is divided into two parts, with the first part (verses 1-6) extolling the glory of God’s creation and the second part (verses 7-14) focusing on the benefits and perfection of God’s law.

In verse 8, David specifically highlights two aspects of God’s law: the statutes of the Lord and the commandment of the Lord. Let’s break down each part:

“The statutes of the Lord are right”: Statutes refer to the laws, regulations, and principles established by God. These statutes are not only God’s laws, but they are also characterised by righteousness and justice. They reflect God’s perfect moral standards and provide guidance on how to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. The psalmist emphasises that these statutes are right, implying that they are just and fair in every way.

“Rejoicing the heart”: The statutes of the Lord bring joy and gladness to the heart. This suggests that following God’s laws leads to a sense of inner delight, contentment, and peace. When we align our lives with God’s statutes, we experience the joy of living in harmony with His divine principles.

“The commandment of the Lord is pure”: The commandment of the Lord refers to His instructions and directives given to His people. This commandment is described as pure, indicating its flawless nature. God’s commandments are untainted by any impurity or error. They are perfect and trustworthy, without any hint of deceit or impure motives.

“Enlightening the eyes”: The commandments of the Lord bring enlightenment and understanding to the eyes. They provide wisdom, insight, and discernment, enabling us to see the truth and make right choices. God’s commandments illuminate our path and help us navigate life with clarity and purpose.

Overall, Psalm 19:8 highlights the beauty, righteousness, and purity of God’s statutes and commandments. It emphasises the positive impact they have on the human heart and mind. As we study and obey God’s law, we can find joy, guidance, and enlightenment, leading to a life that is pleasing to Him.
