Psalms 21:12
Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.
Psalms 21:12 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 21 is a royal psalm of thanksgiving for God’s blessings and victories given to the king. This verse concludes a section describing the defeat of the king’s enemies. The preceding verse (Psalm 21:11) says the enemies plotted evil against the king, but here God turns their plans back on them. Their schemes will not succeed because God will turn them back.
Meaning
The phrase “make them turn their back” means God causes the enemies to flee in defeat. The Hebrew word for “back” can also mean “shoulder” or “corner,” so some understand it as God thrusting enemies into a corner before shooting them. Other translations render the phrase as “put them to flight” (ESV, CSB). The arrows “upon thy strings” picture God’s readiness to strike with long-range, precise, and deadly weaponry. This shows God’s complete ability to confront and defeat any opposition. The imagery is vivid: God makes the enemies turn their backs and prepares arrows aimed at their faces.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the broader biblical theme of God as a divine warrior who fights for His people. In the New Testament, God’s ultimate victory is in Christ, who defeats sin and death and will one day judge all enemies. The enemies here can represent physical adversaries, spiritual forces, or personal struggles, but the certainty is that God will vindicate His people. This is a declaration of confidence in God’s deliverance and judgment.
Application
Believers can trust that God is not only protector but also the one who fights our battles. When faced with adversity, we can rely on His strength and deliverance, knowing He is more than capable of overcoming any obstacle. Just as God’s arrows are perfectly aimed, His plans for our lives are perfect and purposeful, working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). This verse encourages trust in God’s protection and the certainty that He will vindicate His people.
Reflection
This verse invites us to rest in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. Even when enemies scheme against us, God’s readiness to act gives us confidence. We can place our trust in His providence and wisdom, knowing that He will turn every attack into an occasion for His glory and our good.
