Psalms 22:7

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

Psalms 22:7 (KJV)

Psalm 22 is a Messianic psalm attributed to King David. Its prophetic words find fulfillment in the life, suffering, and death of Jesus Christ.

In verse 7, the psalmist expresses the anguish and humiliation that the Messiah, represented as the speaker, experiences. The phrase “All they that see me laugh me to scorn” reveals that the Messiah is subjected to ridicule and mockery by those who witness His suffering. This verse highlights the profound emotional pain and rejection that the Messiah endures during His ordeal.

The following phrases, “they shoot out the lip” and “they shake the head,” further emphasize the disdain and contempt shown towards the Messiah. These actions signify gestures of derision and taunting, symbolizing the deep humiliation He faces. The mockery is not only verbal but also physical, as onlookers use body language to express their scorn.

This verse, in its original context, may have referred to specific events in King David’s life. However, from a Messianic perspective, Christians interpret this verse as a foretelling of the rejection and mockery Jesus experienced during His crucifixion. When Jesus was crucified, He faced intense ridicule from the religious leaders, Roman soldiers, and even some of the spectators. People mocked Him, scoffed at His claims to be the Son of God, and challenged His ability to save Himself (Matthew 27:39-43, Mark 15:29-32, Luke 23:35-39). The fulfillment of this verse is seen in the soldiers who mocked Jesus in Pilate’s hall and in the Jews who derided Him on the cross, though some faithful followers, including John and the women, stood afar off.

This verse in Psalms 22:7 serves as a reminder of the suffering and rejection endured by Jesus on behalf of humanity. It underscores His identification with human suffering, as well as His willingness to endure humiliation for the salvation of mankind. Even in the midst of intense suffering, God’s purposes were being accomplished through the Messiah’s endurance of shame and rejection.

For Christians, Psalms 22:7 is a poignant reminder of the depth of Jesus’ sacrifice and the significance of His redemptive work on the cross. It encourages believers to reflect on the price paid for their salvation and to respond with gratitude, humility, and a commitment to follow Christ’s example of selflessness and endurance in the face of adversity.
