Psalms 24:5

He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Context

Psalm 24 is attributed to King David. It declares God’s sovereignty as Creator and King, and it asks who may enter His holy presence. The preceding verses describe the person who ascends the hill of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart (Psalm 24:3-4). This verse promises that such a person will receive blessing and righteousness from God.

Meaning

The blessing from the Lord means His favour, goodness, and provision. It is not earned but flows from His love for those who sincerely seek Him. The righteousness mentioned here is not something we achieve by our own effort. It is a gift from God, who is the source of salvation. This righteousness makes the believer right or just in God’s eyes. Some translations render it as “vindication” or “declared innocent,” showing the judicial side of God’s saving work. God Himself is the judge who declares the believer righteous, not because of human merit but because of His grace.

The phrase “God of his salvation” points to God as the One who delivers from sin and its consequences. Salvation is not only a past event but an ongoing relationship with the redeeming God. Through this relationship, He clothes the believer with His righteousness. This righteousness is a divine gift, often understood as the righteousness of God imputed to the believer, making them righteous before Him.
