Psalms 25:10

All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Context

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers and songs, many attributed to King David. This psalm is a prayer for guidance, deliverance, and forgiveness. In the verses just before this one, David asks the Lord to show him His ways and to pardon his sins. Verse 10 answers that request with a firm promise about the character of God’s leading.

Meaning

The Hebrew word for mercy is chesed, which means steadfast love and covenant faithfulness. The word for truth is emeth, meaning reliability and faithfulness. Together they show that every path the Lord takes with His people is shaped by His compassionate love and His unwavering truth. His ways are never random or harsh; they always match His promises.

The verse names a condition: God’s mercy and truth belong to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. The covenant is God’s binding agreement to love, protect, and bless His people. Testimonies are His commands and instructions. Keeping them means obeying and trusting what God has revealed. This is not a way to earn God’s favor, but the natural response of a heart that belongs to Him.

Biblical connections

This Old Testament promise finds its fullest meaning in Jesus Christ, who is described as full of grace and truth (John 1:14). In Him, God’s mercy and truth meet perfectly. The same covenant faithfulness that guided David is now seen clearly in the Savior who leads His people by the same steadfast love.

Application

When we obey God’s Word and seek His guidance, we can trust that His direction is always good. Even when His path is difficult, it is still marked by mercy and truth. We can pray with confidence, knowing that the Lord who led David will also lead us with the same faithful love.
