Psalms 25:9

The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

Context

Psalm 25 is a prayer of David, who asks the Lord for guidance, pardon, and protection. In the verses just before this one, David declares that the Lord is good and upright, and that He teaches sinners in the way (Psalm 25:8). This verse continues that thought by showing the kind of people God is ready to lead: the meek.

Meaning

The word “meek” describes those who are humble, gentle, and submissive in spirit. They do not insist on their own way, but they bow before God’s will. Some translations render this word as “humble” or “afflicted.” It can also mean those who see themselves as needy and helpless before God, aware of their sin and their need for His mercy.

The verse promises two things to such people. First, God will guide them in judgment. This means He will help them make wise decisions, discern what is right, and understand His ways. He leads them by His Spirit into truth, giving them a right judgment about things that differ. Second, God will teach them His way. This is the way of His commandments, His statutes, and His ordinances. The Lord does not leave the meek to stumble in darkness; He personally instructs them in the path of righteousness.

Biblical connections

This promise fits a wider biblical truth: God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5). The meek are not weak in the eyes of God; rather, they are strong in their trust in Him. Their humility opens the door for divine instruction, because they are ready to listen and obey.

Application

Humility is the key to receiving God’s guidance. When we admit that we do not have all the answers, we become teachable. We can trust that God will lead us in our decisions, both great and small. We should also actively seek His teaching, reading His Word and praying for understanding, knowing that He delights to instruct the humble.

God’s care for the meek is a source of great comfort. He does not ignore the lowly or the broken. Instead, He draws near to them, guiding their steps and teaching them His way. This verse encourages us to come before God with a gentle and submissive heart, confident that He will lead us in the right path.

Reflection

Do we approach God with meekness, or do we rely on our own understanding? The promise of this verse is for those who are willing to be led. Let us ask the Lord to make us meek, so that we may receive His guidance and learn His way.
