Psalms 34:13

Keepe thy tongue from euill, and thy lippes from speaking guile. Psalms 34:13 (KJV)

Psalm 34 is a song of deliverance and thanksgiving. David composed this psalm while he pretended to be insane before Achish, the king of Gath, in order to escape from his enemies (1 Samuel 21:10-15). Even amid those perilous circumstances he rejoices in God’s faithfulness and invites others to join him in praising the Lord.

The Power of Speech: The verse highlights the importance of controlling our tongues and using our words wisely. Our speech has the capacity to bring blessing or harm to ourselves and to those around us.

Avoiding Evil: David urges believers to refrain from speaking evil. This includes not only foul language or cursing but also slander, gossip, lies, and any form of deceitful speech.

Guarding Our Speech: The passage calls us to be mindful of the words we utter, striving to speak that which builds up, encourages, and brings glory to God. We are to avoid negative or harmful speech that might wound others or damage our own integrity.

Honesty and Integrity: “Speaking guile” refers to deceitful language intended to mislead or manipulate. As followers of God we are called to live lives of honesty and integrity in both word and deed, speaking truth, being transparent, and shunning deception.

Reflecting God’s Character: By guarding our tongues and speaking truth, love, and kindness, we mirror the character of God. Believers are invited to imitate Christ, who was known for His gentle and truthful speech.

Seeking God’s Help: Recognizing the difficulty of mastering our tongues, we must rely on God’s strength and guidance. Through prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit we can cultivate self‑control and align our speech with God’s will.
