Psalms 34:12
“12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?”
Context:Psalm 34 is a psalm of David, written during a time when he was on the run from King Saul. David sought refuge in the city of Gath, which was under the rule of the Philistines. In this psalm, David expresses his gratitude and praise to God for His deliverance and protection.
Desire for Life:The verse begins with a rhetorical question: “What man is he that desireth life?” It implies that the answer is obvious-everyone desires life. It reflects a universal human longing for a good and fulfilling life. This desire is a natural inclination placed within us by God.
Love for Many Days:The second part of the verse states, “and loveth many days.” Here, David emphasizes not just the desire for life but also a love for a prolonged existence. This longing is to experience the fullness of life, filled with blessings, joy, and God’s goodness.
Seeing Good:The verse concludes with the purpose of desiring life and loving many days: “that he may see good.” David’s desire is not just for an extended life but specifically to see and experience the goodness of God. It refers to perceiving, enjoying, and being a witness to the goodness that comes from a relationship with God.
Application:
- Psalm 34:12:encourages us to reflect on our desires and priorities in life. It prompts us to ask ourselves if we truly desire a fulfilling life and love the idea of experiencing many days. Moreover, it challenges us to focus on seeking and recognizing the goodness of God in our lives.
By desiring life, we acknowledge the gift God has given us, and it motivates us to make the most of our days. However, the pursuit of a fulfilling life should not be self-centred or driven by selfish ambitions. Instead, we should seek to see and experience the goodness that comes from a relationship with God.
In practical terms, this verse encourages us to cultivate a grateful attitude, recognising and appreciating the blessings and goodness of God in our daily lives. It prompts us to be attentive to the ways in which God reveals His goodness, whether through answered prayers, divine provision, loving relationships, or spiritual growth.
Ultimately, Psalm 34:12 invites us to align our desires and love for life with a pursuit of God’s goodness, acknowledging Him as the source of true fulfilment and meaning in our lives.
