Psalms 36:5

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Context

Psalm 36 is a song of David. It contrasts the wickedness of evildoers with the goodness of God. The earlier verses describe how sinners flatter themselves and plan evil. Then the psalm turns to praise, declaring that God’s mercy and faithfulness are far greater than human sin.

Meaning

The word “mercy” here translates the Hebrew term chesed. It means God’s loyal, covenant love. This is not a passing feeling but a steadfast kindness that God shows to His people even when they fail. The psalmist says this mercy reaches to the heavens, showing that it has no limit and no end. It is so vast that it covers all creation.

“Faithfulness” translates emunah, which means firmness, reliability, and truth. God always keeps His promises. His word never fails. The picture of faithfulness reaching to the clouds shows that it covers all of life, like the sky that spreads over the whole earth. These two attributes together reveal that God’s love is not capricious but rooted in His unchanging character.

In Psalm 36:6, the next verse continues the same thought, saying God’s righteousness is like the great mountains and His judgments are like the great deep. This shows that the psalmist is not speaking of one attribute alone. Mercy and faithfulness belong together. God’s love is not weak or changeable; it is firmly grounded in His covenant loyalty.

Application

Because God’s mercy reaches to the heavens, no sin or failure can place us beyond His reach. We can come to Him honestly, knowing that His kindness is greater than our guilt. Because His faithfulness reaches to the clouds, we can trust His promises even when our circumstances seem dark.
