Psalms 5:2

Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.

Psalms 5:2 (KJV)

Psalm 5 is attributed to David and is a morning prayer for God’s guidance and protection against the wicked. In verse 1, David pleads for God to hear his words and consider his meditation. Then, in verse 2, he intensifies his plea, asking God to “hearken” to the voice of his cry and acknowledging Him as his King and God.

David begins by asking God to “hearken,” which means to listen attentively or give heed. The word “cry” suggests more than groans or words; it indicates a loud outcry of a person in great distress. This shows David’s deep dependence on God and his belief that God is attentive to the prayers of His people. As believers, we can also come before God with our needs, knowing that He is always ready to listen and respond to our heartfelt cries.

David addresses God as “my King, and my God.” This phrase reflects his personal relationship with God, where he recognises God’s authority and sovereignty over his life. By acknowledging God as King, David demonstrates his submission to God’s rule and his recognition that God has ultimate authority and power. Furthermore, David also refers to God as his God, indicating his personal and intimate relationship with Him. David’s words remind us that as believers, we too can approach God with reverence, acknowledging His lordship over our lives and recognising Him as our personal God.

David concludes the verse by stating, “for unto thee will I pray.” This declaration reveals David’s commitment to prayer as a means of communication and fellowship with God. Despite the challenges he faces and the enemies surrounding him, David chooses to direct his prayers to God alone. It demonstrates his confidence in God’s ability to hear and answer his prayers. David’s example encourages us to prioritise prayer in our lives, knowing that God is always ready to listen and respond to the cries of His children.

Psalm 5:2 teaches us the importance of crying out to God, acknowledging His kingship and deity, and maintaining a consistent and fervent prayer life. It reminds us that God is attentive to our cries and that we can trust in His faithfulness to hear and answer us according to His perfect will.

Prayer is an act of acknowledging God’s kingship and our dependence on Him alone. David’s example encourages us to approach God boldly, pouring out our hearts in prayer, knowing He listens and cares.
