Psalms 5:8

Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.

Psalms 5:8 (KJV)

Psalm 5 is a morning prayer of King David, who asks God for guidance and protection while facing enemies. David begins the day by placing his path before the Lord, showing that he depends on God rather than on his own wisdom.

David asks to be led in God’s righteousness, meaning he wants to walk according to God’s perfect moral standards, not his own judgment. The phrase “because of mine enemies” shows that opposition makes his need for divine direction urgent. He also prays, “make thy way straight before my face,” which is a picture of a clear, smooth road with no obstacles. David wants God to remove hindrances and show him the direct path that honors Him.

This prayer echoes the theme of God leading His people in paths of righteousness, as seen in Psalm 23:3. There, the shepherd leads beside still waters and in right ways. Both verses teach that God’s guidance is not merely for safety but for a life that pleases Him.

When we face opposition or confusion, we can pray this verse as our own. We admit that we cannot direct our steps and ask God to lead us by His righteousness. We also ask Him to make our way straight, trusting that He will clear the path and keep us from stumbling.

David’s prayer is not for an easy life but for a faithful walk. God’s way is straight and true, even when enemies surround us. We can rest in the assurance that He who leads us in righteousness will also guide our steps each day.
