Psalms 59:8

But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.

Psalms 59:8 (KJV)

Psalm 59 belongs to David, written when King Saul sent men to watch David’s house and kill him (1 Samuel 19:11-16). David pleads for God’s protection and deliverance from his enemies, expressing trust in God’s sovereignty and justice. In this verse, David declares that the Lord laughs at the wicked and holds all the heathen in derision.

The verse begins by acknowledging God’s supremacy over the situation. Despite the schemes and threats of David’s enemies, he confidently declares that the Lord is in control. This acknowledgment reflects David’s understanding that power and authority belong to God alone.

The Lord’s laughter is not frivolous. It signifies God’s sovereign response to the futility of human schemes against Him and His anointed. God’s laughter represents His complete confidence and assurance in His ultimate victory over all wickedness.

The second part of the verse states that God will have all the heathen in derision. The Hebrew word for “heathen” (goyim) refers to nations or Gentiles, emphasizing that God’s sovereignty extends over all peoples. God holds the nations or the enemies of David in contempt, ridiculing their futile attempts to resist His purposes. This highlights the contrast between the fleeting power of humans and the eternal might of the Almighty.

The same divine derision is spoken of regarding the enemies of Christ in Psalm 2:4, connecting this verse to the Messiah’s ultimate victory. God’s laughter at the wicked is a consistent theme, showing that He will disappoint the counsels of the wicked, hinder their enterprises, and expose them to shame.

As we reflect on this verse, several applications arise:

  • Trust in God’s sovereignty: Like David, we should place our trust in God’s sovereignty and believe that He is ultimately in control, even in the face of opposition or threats. Knowing that God has the final say brings comfort and confidence in challenging times.

  • Assurance of divine justice: The verse assures us that God is just and will bring about justice in His perfect timing. Even when it seems that evil is prevailing, we can have confidence that God’s laughter will turn into judgment, and His righteousness will prevail.

  • Humility in the face of wickedness: Recognizing God’s power should cultivate humility within us. Instead of responding with anger or seeking revenge against our adversaries, we can leave the judgment in God’s hands, trusting Him to deal with them according to His wisdom.

  • Hope for the oppressed: This verse provides hope to those who face oppression and persecution. Just as God laughed at David’s enemies, He sees the suffering of His people and will act on their behalf. We can find solace in knowing that God is with us, fighting our battles and bringing deliverance.

This verse calls for confident trust in God’s power rather than fear of human threats. It also serves as a warning: those who oppose God and His people will ultimately be brought to derision. For the believer, the application is to rest in God’s sovereign justice, knowing that He is the ultimate judge who laughs at the futility of wickedness.
