Psalms 66:8

O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:

Psalms 66:8 (KJV)

Psalm 66 is a song of praise and thanksgiving, likely composed after a significant deliverance or victory experienced by the community of Israel. This verse serves as a hinge: it calls all peoples to join the praise the psalmist has already begun, and it prepares the way for the reasons for praise that follow.

The verse begins with a call to bless God. Blessing God means acknowledging His greatness, goodness, and faithfulness—an act of worship and adoration. The word “people” is broad, inviting not only Israel but all nations to join, emphasizing the universal scope of God’s worthiness to be praised. The second part instructs the people to make the voice of His praise heard. Praise should not be limited to silent contemplation but expressed audibly. The psalmist encourages the people to proclaim God’s praise, vocalize their gratitude, and make it known to others.

The call to make praise heard echoes the wider biblical theme of declaring God’s mighty works among the nations. In Psalm 66, the psalmist has already testified of God’s deeds, and now he invites all peoples to join. This public, vocal praise is a witness to the world, drawing others to God.

As we consider this verse, we can draw practical applications:

  • Corporate Worship: The psalmist addresses the entire community, emphasizing the importance of collective worship. Worshipping together can strengthen unity and encourage one another in the faith.

  • Vocal Praise: While private worship is essential, there is value in publicly expressing our praise. Singing hymns, offering prayers of thanksgiving, and sharing testimonies can inspire the congregation.

  • Sharing God’s Goodness: The psalmist encourages the people to share their experiences of God’s goodness and deliverance. Our testimonies can be a powerful witness, drawing others to bless and praise Him.

  • Gratitude and Worship: Blessing God and making His praise heard are acts of gratitude. When we recognize God’s blessings, we should respond with heartfelt worship, both individually and in community.

Psalm 66:8 reminds us of the importance of praising God audibly and encouraging others to do the same. It calls us to engage in collective worship, share our testimonies, and express gratitude for God’s goodness. Our praise is not only for our own benefit but also a witness to all peoples.
