Psalms 71:13

Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

Psalms 71:13 (KJV)

Psalm 71 is a prayer of trust and deliverance, often attributed to King David. The psalmist speaks from deep reliance on God while facing enemies and troubles. The words “adversaries to my soul” point to those who oppose his very life and well-being. These foes may be physical, spiritual, or even internal struggles that threaten his faith.

To be “confounded” means to be thrown into confusion, so that the plans of the wicked fail. To be “consumed” suggests complete defeat, like smoke that vanishes away. The request that enemies be “covered with reproach and dishonour” asks that their shame be public and their reputation ruined. This is a plea for God’s justice, not personal revenge. The Hebrew word for adversary is related to “Satan,” showing how such opposition can mirror the devil’s hatred for the souls of men.

Similar prayers appear in Psalm 35:4 and Psalm 70:2, where the psalmist asks God to turn back those who seek his harm. The New Testament also speaks of the wicked being destroyed by the breath of Christ’s mouth and the brightness of His coming (2 Thessalonians 2:8). These connections show that God alone has the right to judge, and He will vindicate those who trust in Him.

This verse teaches us to bring our cries for justice to God rather than taking revenge. We can trust that He sees every wrong and will act in His perfect time. When we face opposition, we should follow the psalmist’s example and turn to God as our refuge. We can also pray for our enemies, asking God to change their hearts, while leaving their judgment in His hands.

The strong language of this verse reminds us that God cares about the suffering of His people. He is not distant from our pain. As we read the Psalms, we see honest emotions offered to God in faith. This encourages us to bring our own feelings of hurt and anger to Him, trusting that He will act justly and mercifully.
