Psalms 71:12

O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.

Psalms 71:12 (KJV)

Psalm 71 is a prayer for deliverance and protection, traditionally attributed to King David. In this verse, the psalmist pleads with God to draw near and to come quickly to his aid. The psalm reflects a deep dependence on God, especially in times of trouble and old age.

The plea “O God, be not far from me” expresses a longing for God’s presence. Though God is everywhere by His power, when He seems distant, His people feel helpless. The psalmist knows that true comfort and strength come only from God’s nearness. The second plea, “make haste for my help,” shows urgency. He does not ask for help from any other source; he turns to God alone, confident that God can deliver him swiftly.

This verse echoes other urgent prayers. Psalm 70:1 begins with a similar cry for God to hasten to help. Psalm 22:19 also asks that God not be far off, calling Him “my strength.” These parallels show a consistent pattern of believers crying out to God in distress, trusting in His power and presence.

Believers today can follow this example. In moments of fear or need, we can call on God with honesty and urgency. We do not need to hide our desperation. Instead, we can ask God to be near and to act quickly, knowing that He hears and cares.

The psalmist calls God “my God,” showing a personal relationship. This verse invites us to approach God not as a distant ruler, but as our own God, who is ready to help. Our confidence rests not in our own strength, but in His faithful love and ability to save.
