Psalms 71:18

Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

Psalms 71:18 (KJV)

Psalm 71 is a prayer of an older believer who has trusted God from youth. The writer speaks from experience of God’s protection and deliverance. Now he faces old age and grey hair, and he asks God not to leave him. His request is not only for comfort. He wants to live long enough to finish a mission: telling the next generation about God’s strength.

The phrase “shewed thy strength” means deliberate, active proclamation. The psalmist does not plan to leave a silent example. He intends to speak clearly about what God has done. The words “this generation” and “every one that is to come” show that his witness must reach both people alive now and those born later. This is intergenerational witness, a duty that is ongoing and forward-looking. Old age is not a time to stop serving God. It is a unique season for testimony.

Earlier in the same psalm, the writer remembers that God has been his hope from childhood (Psalm 71:5-6). That lifelong experience gives him confidence to pray “forsake me not.” His trust rests on God’s proven faithfulness, not on his own merit. The same God who carried him through youth will stay with him in old age.

Believers of every age can learn from this prayer. Older Christians have a special duty to model and verbalize trust in God before younger people. Their stories of deliverance are powerful evidence of God’s power. Younger believers can encourage and honor those who are aging, helping them find ways to share their testimony. The goal is not to avoid death but to complete the work God has given.

This verse invites each reader to consider how they will pass on faith. God’s power is best seen through lives that have depended on Him for many years. Aging is an opportunity for continued fruitfulness, not retirement from spiritual labor. The prayer of the psalmist becomes a model for all who want their lives to speak of God’s faithfulness to every generation.
