Psalms 75:5

Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

Context

Psalm 75 is a song of thanksgiving that also carries a strong message of divine judgment. The psalmist, Asaph, speaks for God, who declares that he will judge uprightly. In the verses just before this one, God addresses the boastful and the wicked, commanding them to stop their foolish talk and to stop lifting up their horn. This verse continues that direct rebuke, warning against pride that reaches toward heaven itself.

Meaning

The verse uses two vivid images from the ancient world. The horn was a symbol of strength, power, and honor, especially the horn of an animal like an ox or a ram. To “lift up your horn on high” means to boast in your own power, to exalt yourself, or to act with proud self-sufficiency, especially against God. The second image, “speak not with a stiff neck,” describes a haughty and defiant attitude. A stiff neck is one that refuses to bow or submit. To speak with a stiff neck is to speak arrogantly and stubbornly, refusing to acknowledge God’s authority. Together, these two commands forbid both proud action and proud speech.

Biblical connections

The image of the horn appears throughout Scripture as a sign of strength and victory. Here, the warning is clear: human strength and honor come from God, and to boast in them as if they were our own is an offense against him. The following verse in this psalm reinforces the point, saying that promotion comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south, but from God alone. We are also to guard our speech, refusing to speak with defiant arrogance toward God or toward others. The warning is timeless: do not boast in your own power, and do not speak with insolent pride, for God opposes the proud.
