Psalms 76:1

In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.

Psalms 76:1 (KJV)

Psalm 76 is a song of Asaph, a chief musician in David’s time. It was likely written after a great victory, though the exact event is not certain. The psalm praises God for His power and for dwelling among His people. Verse 1 opens the song by declaring that God is known in Judah and that His name is great in Israel.

“In Judah is God known” means that the people of Judah, one of the twelve tribes, truly recognized God’s presence and authority. Judah was the tribe of David’s royal line, and Jerusalem, with the temple, stood within its land. “His name is great in Israel” points to God’s character and reputation. In Hebrew thought, a name reveals the person. So God’s name being great means His power, holiness, and deeds are honored throughout the whole nation.

The verse uses Hebrew parallelism, pairing Judah with Israel to represent all of God’s people. God is known through His creation, His care, and His judgments, but especially through His word and His laws given to Israel. He also makes Himself known in a saving way through His Spirit and His Son to those who trust Him.

The next verses (Psalm 76:2-3) show that God’s dwelling in Zion is the basis for His saving acts, as He breaks the weapons of war. This connection teaches that God’s presence among His people leads to their deliverance.

This verse encourages us to acknowledge God openly in our own communities. Just as God was known in Judah, our lives should make Him known to others. We honor His name when we speak of His love, grace, and salvation, and when we live in a way that reflects His character.

True knowledge of God is not merely information. It leads to reverent worship and trust. When we see God’s power and His covenant faithfulness, our response is to praise Him and to bring our lives as an offering to Him.
