Psalms 78:72
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
Psalms 78:72 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 78 is a historical psalm attributed to Asaph. It retells Israel’s repeated disobedience and God’s enduring faithfulness. This final verse describes David, the shepherd-king, whom God chose to lead His people. The Hebrew word for “fed” means to shepherd or tend a flock, and some translations render it as “shepherded.” The Targum interprets “fed” as “reigned over,” showing that David’s rule was a form of shepherding, caring for Israel as a shepherd cares for sheep.
Meaning
“According to the integrity of his heart” points to David’s uprightness and sincerity. His motives were pure, seeking the good of the people and the glory of God, not his own honor or family advancement. “By the skilfulness of his hands” refers to wisdom, understanding, and practical ability. David’s leadership combined inner character with outward competence. His heart was upright, and his hands were capable. This dual quality shows that godly leadership requires both integrity and skill. The verse highlights that true shepherding involves both who we are and what we do.
Biblical connections
David’s integrity matches his description as “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). This verse also points beyond David to the ideal Shepherd-King, Jesus Christ, who perfectly embodies integrity and skillful care. God’s provision and guidance through David foreshadow the perfect shepherding of Christ. As the ultimate Shepherd, Jesus leads His people with complete wisdom and love.
Application
Believers today can learn from David’s example. In any role of service, whether leading a family, a church, or a workplace, character and competence belong together. Integrity of heart means serving with pure motives. Skillfulness of hands means developing the abilities God gives. We can trust that God raises up leaders who combine these qualities, and we can also grow in them ourselves. This verse encourages us to pursue both inner devotion and practical excellence in all we do.
Reflection
This verse assures us that God shepherds His people with perfect integrity and skill. He guides our lives with wisdom and care, just as He guided Israel through David. Reflecting on God’s past faithfulness helps us trust His present provision and future guidance. We can rest in the knowledge that our Shepherd knows the way and leads us well.
