Psalms 81:9

“There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.”

Psalms 81:9 reminds us of the importance of worshiping the one true God and not turning to idolatry or worshiping foreign gods. Let’s dive deeper into the context and message of this verse.

The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of praise, worship, thanksgiving, and lament. It contains a variety of themes and emotions, and Psalm 81 is no exception. This psalm is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians appointed by King David to lead the worship in the tabernacle.

In this particular verse, God is addressing the people of Israel, reminding them of His covenant and their obligation to worship Him alone. The phrase “there shall no strange god be in thee” means that they should not allow any foreign or false gods to have a place of honour or authority in their lives. The Hebrew word for “strange” can also be translated as “foreign” or “alien”.

Idolatry was a persistent temptation for the Israelites throughout their history. They were surrounded by nations that worshiped a multitude of gods, and they were often enticed to follow their practices. However, God made it clear that He is the only true God, and His people should not worship any other deity.

The second part of the verse states, “neither shalt thou worship any strange god.” This emphasizes the exclusive devotion and worship that should be given to God alone. Worshiping other gods or idols not only breaks the first commandment, which states, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3), but it also hinders the personal relationship between God and His people.

The message of this verse is relevant beyond the context of ancient Israel. It serves as a reminder to all believers today that we should worship and serve the one true God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. We are called to have a personal relationship with Him and to give Him our complete allegiance and devotion. Worshiping anything or anyone else, be it material possessions, ideologies, or false deities, can lead us away from the true source of life and blessings.

In summary, Psalms 81:9 urges us to remain faithful to God and not to allow any foreign gods or idols to take His place in our lives. It is a call to worship and serve the one true God with our whole hearts and to recognise His exclusive authority and sovereignty.
