Psalms 86:8
Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
Psalms 86:8 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 86 is a prayer of David, a heartfelt plea for mercy, protection, and guidance when enemies oppose him. The psalm shows David’s deep faith in God’s character and power. In this verse, David speaks directly to the Lord, declaring that no other being can compare to Him. This confession is not a detached idea; it is the ground of his trust and worship.
Meaning
David says, “Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord.” The word “gods” means the false gods and idols that other nations worship. David affirms that none of these can equal Yahweh, the covenant name of God. This name reminds Israel of God’s personal relationship with them. David also declares, “neither are there any works like unto thy works.” God’s deeds in creation, deliverance, and redemption are without equal. No idol has ever acted with such power or faithfulness. The verse is a doxological confession within a prayer, acknowledging God’s incomparability both in being and in action.
Biblical connections
This confession echoes the first commandment, which demands exclusive devotion to God. It also looks forward to the day when all nations will worship Him, as verse 9 of this psalm shows. The New Testament reveals that God’s incomparability is fully seen in Christ, who is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact image of His nature (Hebrews 1:3). Christ is worshiped as Lord, and His supremacy confirms that God alone is Creator and Redeemer.
Application
Worship God alone, for He alone is worthy of praise.
Trust God’s power when you face problems, because His works are unmatched.
Reject every false god, whether a literal idol or anything that takes God’s place in your heart.
Reflection
David’s words are not just a statement; they are the foundation for his prayer. Because God is unique and His works are mighty, David can bring his needs to Him with confidence. We can do the same, knowing that the God who has no equal will act on behalf of those who trust Him. This truth calls us to exclusive worship and confident prayer, for our God is without rival in all the earth.
