Psalms 87:3
“Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.”
This profound declaration from the Psalmist directs our gaze to a magnificent truth: the extraordinary significance of the "city of God." In its immediate biblical context, this verse speaks of historical Jerusalem, the earthly city chosen by God's sovereign grace to be the center of true worship and the dwelling place of His unique presence. For believers today, the city of God represents the universal assembly of the faithful and the enduring kingdom of Christ. The Lord continually builds up His spiritual Jerusalem, gathers the exiled, heals the brokenhearted, and establishes a kingdom that cannot be moved.
When we pause to consider the word "Selah" at the end of this verse, we are invited to stop and deeply reflect. What a tremendous privilege it is to be citizens of this divine city! The glorious things spoken of it encompass the infallible promises of redemption, eternal peace, and the abiding, intimate presence of the Lord. Our ultimate citizenship is not rooted in fragile earthly nations, which rise and fall with the tides of human history, but in the enduring, glorious city established by God Himself. May this truth shift our focus away from temporary struggles and anchor our hearts in the eternal hope, majestic future, and unbreakable security secured by God's unwavering grace.
