Psalms 89:12

The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

Context

Psalm 89 comes from Ethan the Ezrahite, a wise teacher who reflects on God’s covenant with David. In this verse, the psalmist praises God as the Creator of the whole earth. The words “north” and “south” stand for every direction, showing that no part of the world lies outside God’s authority. This poetic language covers all creation, from one end of the earth to the other.

Meaning

Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon are two majestic peaks in Israel. Tabor rises alone from the plain of Esdraelon, while Hermon stands far to the north. The psalmist gives these mountains human feelings, saying they “shall rejoice in thy name.” This picture shows that all creation, even silent mountains, responds with joy to its Maker. The personification reminds us that every part of the earth, whether near or far, belongs to God and praises Him.

Biblical connections

The surrounding verses declare that the heavens and the earth belong to the Lord, and that His arm is mighty. Tabor is also remembered as the traditional place where Christ was transfigured before His disciples (Matthew 17:1-2). If so, the mountain truly rejoiced in His name when His glory appeared there.
