Psalms 87:4

I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.

Psalms 87:4 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a psalm of the sons of Korah, a song that celebrates Zion, the city of God. Here God Himself speaks, naming nations that were once enemies or strangers to Israel.

“Rahab” is a poetic name for Egypt, the power that oppressed Israel in the time of Moses. Babylon later conquered and exiled God’s people. Philistia and Tyre were nearby rivals, while Ethiopia (Cush) stood for a distant, foreign land. By listing these names, God declares that He will “make mention” of them “to them that know me.” This is not a political map but a spiritual promise.

The phrase “this man was born there” uses the language of a city registry. In ancient times, being born in a city gave a person full rights and belonging. God speaks of people from these hostile or far-off nations as if they were born in Zion. He grants them citizenship and a heritage among His people. This is an act of sovereign grace: God Himself initiates the inclusion and records their names.

This vision of foreigners becoming citizens of God’s city points forward to the New Testament truth that the gospel is for all peoples. Through faith in Christ, believers from every nation become “fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). The glory of Zion is not its location but God’s presence, and that glory grows as people from every nation are born into it.

God’s love reaches beyond every boundary of nation, history, or hostility. No person is too distant or too opposed to be welcomed into His family. This truth calls us to rejoice in the breadth of God’s salvation and to treat all people as potential citizens of His kingdom.

Our true citizenship is in the heavenly Zion, established by God Himself. Because He has recorded our names, we can live with confidence and hope, knowing that we belong to Him forever.
