Psalms 94:10
He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
Psalms 94:10 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 94 is a plea for God to act against the proud and wicked who oppress the righteous. The psalmist cries out for justice, and in verse 10 he asks two rhetorical questions that affirm God’s character. The word “heathen” means the Gentile nations, those who do not know or follow the true God. The psalmist argues from the greater to the lesser: if God disciplines the nations, He will certainly correct His own people when they stray. This correction is not a sign of abandonment but of His covenant faithfulness and care.
Meaning
“He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct?” This question points to God’s authority and judgment over all nations. The word “chastiseth” carries the sense of disciplining or instructing through correction. The question expects an emphatic yes: of course God will correct. He is not distant or unaware; He is the active Judge who sees injustice and will act. His discipline of the nations shows that He is sovereign over all, and His correction of His people flows from the same righteous character.
“He that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?” This question emphasizes God’s omniscience and wisdom. God is the source of all knowledge and understanding. If He imparts knowledge to humanity, He must surely possess it Himself. His knowledge guarantees that He sees the deeds of the wicked and will bring them to account. Because He is the Teacher of all, nothing escapes His notice, and no wrong is hidden from His sight.
Biblical connections
The immediate context of Psalm 94 includes the psalmist’s declaration that the LORD is his defense and the rock of his refuge (Psalm 94:22). This connection shows that trust in God’s justice and knowledge leads to confidence in Him as a safe refuge. God’s correction of His people is an expression of His care and covenant faithfulness, not abandonment. The same God who judges the nations is the refuge of the righteous, and His knowledge assures us that He will act at the right time.
Application
When faced with injustice or oppression, turn to God in prayer, expressing concerns and seeking His intervention. Trust that He sees and knows all things, and He will act according to His perfect timing.
Recognize God as the ultimate source of knowledge. Seek His wisdom through reading and meditating on His Word, prayer, and the Holy Spirit’s guidance. As you pursue knowledge, trust that God will grant understanding and direct your paths.
In a world where wickedness often seems prevalent, find peace in knowing that God is just. Even when resolution is not immediate, trust that God will ultimately bring about justice and make all things right.
Reflection
The psalmist’s questions reflect deep trust in God’s character. By asking them, he affirms confidence in God’s ability to correct, judge, and teach. This same confidence is available to believers today. God is both just and all-knowing, and therefore He is worthy of trust and obedience. His correction is a sign of His love, and His knowledge is a guarantee that no wrong escapes His notice. Because He is the Judge and Teacher of all, we can rest in His sovereign care and live in the light of His all-seeing wisdom.
