Psalms 98:5

Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

Psalms 98:5 (KJV)

Psalm 98 is a joyful hymn of praise celebrating the Lord’s salvation, righteousness, and faithfulness. The psalmist calls all people to join in singing and making music to worship Him, highlighting His acts of deliverance and the restoration of His people. Verse 5 stands at the heart of this call, urging worshipers to use both instruments and voice in joyful praise.

The verse begins with an exhortation to sing unto the Lord with the harp. Singing is a significant act of worship throughout Scripture, expressing adoration, thanksgiving, and praise. It engages both heart and mind, allowing believers to communicate with God and declare their love and devotion. The harp, mentioned twice for emphasis, was a common stringed instrument in ancient Israelite worship, often associated with joyful and celebratory occasions. Its repetition underscores the importance of offering skilled and heartfelt music to God.

The phrase “the voice of a psalm” highlights singing the inspired words of Scripture. A psalm is a sacred song or hymn used for worship, and the psalms are poetic expressions covering a wide range of human emotions and experiences. Singing them allows believers to internalize God’s truth and promises while bringing their own emotions and experiences before Him. In the New Testament era, this Old Testament language is understood as expressing New Testament worship in Old Testament terms—the “new song” of redeeming grace.

The broader context of Psalm 98 includes the call for all the earth to make a joyful noise with trumpets and cornet, and even the sea and hills rejoicing before the Lord, the King. This verse connects to the practice of singing psalms as a way to communicate with God and express love and gratitude, a practice that continues in the New Testament church (Ephesians 5:19).

  • Worship: Psalm 98:5 reminds us of the importance of worshiping God with all our hearts. Whether through playing musical instruments or using our voices, we are called to offer our best to God in worship.

  • Joyful praise: This psalm encourages us to approach God with joy and exuberance. Our worship should be marked by gladness and thanksgiving, reflecting our gratitude for God’s faithfulness and salvation.

  • Skill and dedication: The reference to the harp suggests that we should bring our skills and talents to worship God. It encourages us to invest time and effort into developing our abilities to honor Him.

  • Singing God’s Word: The phrase “the voice of a psalm” emphasizes the importance of singing the Word of God. The psalms are inspired Scripture, and singing them allows us to internalize God’s truth and promises, while also bringing our emotions and experiences before Him.

Worship is not merely an outward act but involves the heart’s devotion to God. The harp and voice together signify a vibrant, joyful expression of praise, celebrating God’s salvation and sovereignty. This verse invites us to worship with enthusiasm and skill, using music as a vehicle for praise, rooted in the confidence that comes from God’s faithfulness and righteousness.
