Revelation 12:8

And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Revelation 12:8 (KJV)

In Revelation 12, the apostle John records a vision of a great cosmic battle. The dragon, identified later in the chapter as Satan, wars against the woman who represents the people of God, including faithful Israel and the Church. Verse 7 introduces Michael and his angels fighting the dragon, and verse 8 records the outcome: the dragon and his angels did not prevail, and their place was no longer found in heaven.

The phrase “prevailed not” means that Satan and his angels failed in their purpose and did not emerge victorious. The second clause, “neither was their place found any more in heaven,” emphasizes their complete expulsion; they were cast out and seen there no more. This defeat is decisive, though for a time Satan continues his warfare on earth.

Verse 9 identifies the dragon as the old serpent, the Devil, and Satan, cast out into the earth with his angels. Verse 10 celebrates that the accuser of the brethren is cast down, showing that Satan’s access to heaven as an accuser is ended. This victory is accomplished through Christ, and believers share in it by faith.

Believers can take comfort that Satan’s defeat has already been accomplished through Jesus’ death and resurrection. We are called to resist the enemy’s schemes and stand strong in the power of God’s Spirit. We should also be vigilant, recognizing that while Satan’s place in heaven has been lost, he continues to operate on earth, seeking to deceive and hinder believers.

This verse reassures us that despite the spiritual battles we face, God’s power is greater, and Satan’s authority is limited. It encourages us to stand firm in faith, knowing that victory is assured through Christ. The certainty of Satan’s defeat gives us hope and courage to persevere.
