Revelation 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:21
Listen to this article

“And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic and symbolic book that reveals God’s plan for the future and the ultimate victory of Christ over evil. It contains a series of visions given to the apostle John on the island of Patmos. In this particular verse, John describes the opening of the sixth seal, which reveals a sequence of cataclysmic events.

Opening of the Sixth Seal:The opening of the seals in Revelation signifies the unfolding of God’s judgment upon the earth. Each seal reveals a specific event or series of events. The sixth seal is a pivotal moment in the narrative, marking the beginning of cosmic disturbances and signaling the imminent return of Christ.

Great Earthquake:The opening of the sixth seal is accompanied by a great earthquake. This earthquake symbolizes a significant upheaval and shaking, both physically and spiritually. It represents the turmoil and chaos that will occur on the earth during the end times.

Sun Became Black as Sackcloth:The darkening of the sun is a symbol of judgment and distress. It signifies a loss of light, hope, and God’s favour. This cosmic event serves as a powerful sign of the approaching Day of the Lord, a time of divine judgment and the culmination of God’s redemptive plan.

Moon Became as Blood:The turning of the moon into blood is another symbolic representation of judgment. Blood is often associated with death and violence. The moon’s transformation indicates a significant disruption in the natural order of things and serves as a warning of impending doom.

Symbolic Language:It is important to note that the book of Revelation frequently uses symbolic language and imagery to convey its message. The events described are not meant to be interpreted literally but rather as symbolic representations of spiritual realities and the fulfilment of God’s plan.

Application:While the book of Revelation is filled with vivid imagery and prophetic events, its primary purpose is not to satisfy curiosity about future events but to encourage believers to remain faithful and persevere in the face of persecution and trials. The opening of the sixth seal reminds us of the ultimate sovereignty of God over all creation and the certainty of His judgment. It calls us to examine our lives, seek God’s mercy, and be prepared for Christ’s return.

In conclusion, Revelation 6:12 portrays a dramatic and symbolic depiction of the events leading up to the return of Christ and the final judgment. It serves as a reminder of God’s ultimate authority, the impending judgment upon the earth, and the need for repentance and readiness for Christ’s return.
