Revelation 6:14
“And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.”
Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic and symbolic book, written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains visions and messages from Jesus Christ regarding the future events leading up to His second coming and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.
Symbolic Language:In this verse, John uses symbolic language to describe a great cosmic upheaval. The phrase “the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together” signifies a dramatic and cataclysmic event. It depicts the complete removal or rolling up of the sky, as if it were a scroll, revealing the awesome power and presence of God.
Cosmic Significance:The imagery of the sky rolling up like a scroll indicates a divine intervention and a significant change in the order of the universe. It portrays the overwhelming power of God as He prepares to bring judgment upon the earth and initiate the final stages of His plan for redemption and restoration.
Mountains and Islands Moved:The second part of the verse states, “every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” This imagery suggests tremendous geological upheaval and global instability. Mountains and islands, which are generally considered stable and immovable, are being shaken and shifted, signifying the magnitude of the events unfolding.
Symbolic Interpretation:Symbolically, the movement of mountains and islands could represent the collapse of human institutions and power structures. It may symbolize the disruption of earthly kingdoms, nations, and established orders, as God’s judgment shakes the foundations of the world. It implies a complete reordering of the present world system to make way for the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
Prophetic Fulfillment:This verse is part of the description of the events associated with the opening of the sixth seal in Revelation While various interpretations exist regarding the precise timing and nature of these events, many scholars view them as symbolic representations of the tumultuous events that will precede Christ’s return.
Spiritual Application:Beyond the literal and future fulfillment, this verse can also hold spiritual significance for believers. It reminds us of the temporary nature of this world and the certainty of God’s judgment. It encourages us to put our trust in the eternal kingdom of God rather than in the transient things of this world. It serves as a reminder of the need for repentance, faith in Christ, and the urgency to share the Gospel with others.
In conclusion:Revelation 6:14 uses vivid and symbolic language to depict a cosmic upheaval that will accompany God’s judgment upon the earth. It speaks of the heavens departing like a rolled-up scroll and mountains and islands being moved out of their places. This verse reminds us of the awesome power of God, the certainty of His judgment, and the need to prepare ourselves spiritually for His coming kingdom.
