1 Chronicles 15:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel.”

Context:First Chronicles is a book that provides historical accounts of the Israelites, particularly focusing on the reign of King David. In this particular verse, the context revolves around the preparation and subsequent transportation of the Ark of the Covenant.

1 Chronicles 15:7 describes the sanctification of the priests and Levites before they embark on the task of bringing up the ark of the Lord God of Israel. This verse highlights the importance of sanctification, which involves the process of setting oneself apart and purifying oneself for a specific purpose or task. The ark of the Lord God of Israel held great significance for the Israelites as it represents the presence and holiness of God. It contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments and served as a symbol of God’s covenant and His dwelling among His people. The sanctification of the priests and Levites before transporting the ark emphasized their need to approach this sacred task with utmost reverence, purity, and dedication. By sanctifying themselves, they were ensuring that they were spiritually prepared and set apart for the important responsibility of handling the ark, which required adhering to God’s instructions regarding its transportation (Exodus 25:14-15; Numbers 4:15).

Application:The verse 1 Chronicles 15:7 teaches us several important lessons:

Reverence for the presence of God:The ark of the Lord represented God’s presence among His people. It reminds us of the need to approach God with reverence and awe, recognizing His holiness.

Preparation for service:The priests and Levites sanctified themselves before undertaking their task. Similarly, as followers of God, we should prepare ourselves spiritually before engaging in any service or ministry for the Lord. This involves seeking forgiveness, studying God’s Word, and seeking His guidance.

Honoring God’s instructions:The transportation of the ark required adherence to God’s specific instructions. This teaches us the importance of obeying God’s commands and seeking His guidance in all aspects of our lives.

Setting ourselves apart:Sanctification involves setting ourselves apart from worldly influences and dedicating ourselves to God’s purposes. We are called to live holy lives, pursuing righteousness and shunning sin.

Recognizing God’s presence with us:The ark symbolized God’s presence. Today, as believers, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We should acknowledge and seek to live in constant communion with Him, recognizing that we are His dwelling place (1 Corinthians 6:19).

In summary, 1 Chronicles 15:7 reminds us of the importance of sanctification, reverence for God’s presence, and obedience to His instructions. It encourages us to prepare ourselves spiritually and set ourselves apart for God’s purposes, recognizing His indwelling presence in our lives.
