2 Chronicles 26:13
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
2 Chronicles 26:13 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the record of King Uzziah’s reign in 2 Chronicles. Uzziah, also called Azariah, became king of Judah at sixteen years old and ruled for fifty-two years. For much of that time, he sought the Lord and enjoyed success. The army described here was larger than the one his father Amaziah had led, numbering 307,500 trained men ready for battle. This force was organized under the command of Uzziah’s officers, showing his effective leadership and careful preparation for defending his people.
Meaning
The number “three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred” shows a very large fighting force. These men were not casual soldiers; they were equipped and organized to make war with “mighty power.” Their purpose was clear: to help the king against the enemy. The verse emphasizes that the army was ready to fight valiantly whenever the king had need, whether for offensive war or defense against invasion. This reveals Uzziah’s strong leadership and the unity of his people under established authority.
Biblical connections
This passage connects to the earlier account of Amaziah, Uzziah’s father, who had an army of 300,000 men (2 Chronicles 25:5). The increase by 7,500 shows growth under Uzziah’s rule. The verse also prepares us for what follows: Uzziah later became proud and entered the temple unlawfully, and God struck him with leprosy. The strength described here stands in contrast to his later downfall, reminding us that human power can lead to pride if not accompanied by humility.
Application
Uzziah’s example teaches the value of responsible leadership. A leader must care for the safety and welfare of those under his charge. This applies to political leaders, parents, and anyone with authority. It also teaches preparedness. Just as Uzziah prepared his army, believers are called to be spiritually ready for challenges. Ephesians 6:11-12 urges us to put on the whole armour of God to stand against spiritual enemies.
The army’s unity in supporting the king shows the importance of working together. In the body of Christ, believers are to support one another and face spiritual battles as one. No soldier fights alone, and no Christian should live in isolation. This unity is not merely for convenience; it is essential for effective witness and mutual encouragement.
Reflection
While Uzziah trusted in his military strength, true safety comes from the Lord. Proverbs 21:31 reminds us that “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.” Preparation is wise, but our final trust must rest in God, not in human resources. This verse calls us to be both diligent and dependent, ready to act yet humble before the One who gives victory. As we consider our own lives, we must ask whether we rely more on our abilities or on God’s provision.
