2 Chronicles 9:4

And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel; his cupbearers also, and their apparel; and his ascent by which he went up into the house of the Lord; there was no more spirit in her.

2 Chronicles 9:4 (KJV)

The Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon after hearing reports of his wisdom and prosperity. She came to test him with hard questions and to see his kingdom for herself. In this verse, she observes the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the service and clothing of his ministers, his cupbearers and their attire, and the special way he went up to the house of the Lord. The parallel account in 1 Kings 10:5 confirms this event.

“The meat of his table” points to the abundance and wealth of Solomon’s kingdom. “The sitting of his servants” shows the order and organization of his court. “The attendance of his ministers” and “their apparel” reveal the dedication and dignity of those who served him. “His cupbearers also, and their apparel” stresses the careful attention given even to those who prepared and served the king’s drink. “His ascent by which he went up into the house of the Lord” likely refers to a special stairway or passageway Solomon used to enter the temple, showing his reverence for worship. Some translations render this phrase as “burnt offerings,” indicating his devotion in worship. The final phrase, “there was no more spirit in her,” means the queen was so overwhelmed that she lost her breath and could not speak. Her reaction shows that the visible glory of Solomon’s kingdom, including his provision, order, and worship, was so impressive that it left her speechless.

This verse shows the visible results of God’s blessing on Solomon. God had promised to give Solomon riches and honor (1 Kings 3:13), and here those promises are seen in the splendor of his court. The queen’s reaction also points beyond Solomon to a greater king. Jesus later referred to the Queen of Sheba, saying that one greater than Solomon is here (Matthew 12:42). The earthly glory of Solomon was a shadow of the glory of God’s Messiah. Even the greatest earthly glory is only a faint picture of the glory of God and His Christ.

This passage encourages believers to see God’s hand in the order and provision of daily life. The queen noticed not only wealth but also the orderly seating, faithful service, and proper clothing of the court. These details reflect wisdom and care. In the same way, Christians can honor God by doing their work with order and excellence, whether in leadership or in humble service. The queen’s breathless wonder also reminds us that God’s blessings are meant to point people to Him, not to ourselves. When others observe our lives, may they see evidence of God’s goodness and be drawn to praise Him.

When we see the beauty of God’s creation, the order of His church, or the provision of our daily bread, do we pause in awe? The queen was speechless because she saw evidence of God’s favor. Yet the greatest revelation of God’s glory is not in a palace or a table, but in Jesus Christ, who is wiser than Solomon and who offers salvation to all who believe. Let this verse lead us to worship the King who deserves all honor, for His glory far surpasses any earthly splendor.
