1 Chronicles Chapter 13

Summery

1 Chronicles 13 recounts an incident where David, now established as the king of Israel, gathers the leaders and people of Israel to bring back the Ark of the Covenant from Kiriath-jearim to Jerusalem. David proposes this idea as the Ark represents the presence of God among His people. The people agree, and they set out to retrieve the Ark.

They load the Ark onto a new cart, and David and all Israel joyfully proceed with singing and dancing before the Lord. However, as they approach the threshing floor of Chidon, the oxen stumble, and Uzza, one of the men accompanying the Ark, reaches out to steady it. In that moment, God's anger is aroused, and He strikes Uzza dead for his irreverence.

This incident causes David to be afraid and reconsider his plans. He decides to not bring the Ark to Jerusalem but to take it to the house of Obed-edom instead. The Ark remains there for three months, and during this time, Obed-edom and his household are greatly blessed by God.

The chapter concludes with the news of Obed-edom's blessings reaching David's ears. David becomes convinced that the presence of the Ark can bring blessings, so he decides to bring it to Jerusalem once again, this time following the prescribed methods and carrying it on the shoulders of the Levites.
