1 Chronicles 16:11

Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.

1 Chronicles 16:11 (KJV)

First Chronicles records Israel’s history with special attention to King David. In chapter 16, David composes a song of thanksgiving after the ark of the covenant is brought to Jerusalem and placed in a tent he prepared. The ark symbolized God’s presence among His people, so this song celebrates that presence and calls the nation to respond in worship.

The word “seek” means an active, intentional pursuit, not a passive wish. To seek the LORD is to desire to know Him, His will, and His ways with humility and reverence. It is turning to Him as the source of guidance and help, and aligning our lives with His purposes.

“and his strength” points to God’s power and might. His strength includes His ability to deliver, protect, and provide. When we seek God’s strength, we admit our own limits and depend on His supernatural power to sustain us. Our own strength is never enough; we need His to fulfill His purposes.

“seek his face continually” uses a metaphor for seeking His presence, favor, and intimacy. It is not a one-time event but a lifestyle of pursuing God. Continually means we keep seeking His guidance, wisdom, and fellowship every day, not only in times of crisis.

This verse closely parallels Psalm 105:4, which uses nearly identical wording. That connection shows how important this call to seek God was in Israel’s worship. Both passages urge God’s people to make seeking Him a constant priority, not a rare activity.

This verse calls us to examine our priorities. Are we seeking God for what He can give, or for who He is? The answer should be the latter. We are to seek Him for Himself, not just for His blessings or help.

  • Relationship with God: This verse emphasizes a personal and continuous relationship. Our primary focus should be knowing and loving God Himself, not merely receiving from Him.

  • Dependency on God: Recognizing our limitations and relying on His strength is crucial. As we seek Him, we acknowledge that we need His power to face challenges and fulfill our purpose.

  • Consistency and perseverance: “Seek his face continually” reminds us to maintain an ongoing pursuit. It is a lifelong journey of growing in relationship with Him and aligning our lives with His will.

  • Worship and thanksgiving: The context of this song highlights worship and praise. Seeking the LORD and His strength is tied to a heart of gratitude, acknowledging His faithfulness.

Practically, this means setting aside regular time for prayer, reading Scripture, and meditation. It also means consciously depending on God’s strength in every situation and cultivating awareness of His presence throughout the day. True strength and blessing come from seeking God Himself, and He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Seeking God’s face is an act of worship that acknowledges His holiness and our need for His grace. It challenges us to make Him our daily priority, trusting that He is near to those who call on Him. As we seek His face continually, we grow in intimacy with Him and experience His power at work in our lives.
