Psalms 105:4

Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

Psalms 105:4 (KJV)

Psalm 105 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving. It recounts God’s faithfulness to His people, especially Israel. The psalm celebrates the covenant God made with Abraham and how He fulfilled His promises to Abraham’s descendants. It encourages readers to remember and proclaim God’s wonderful works and to seek Him wholeheartedly. Verse 4 is a call to action within this context of remembering God’s past faithfulness.

The verse contains two parallel exhortations. First, believers are called to “Seek the LORD, and his strength.” This emphasizes actively pursuing a relationship with God, which involves seeking His presence, His will, and His guidance. It implies a desire for intimacy with God, longing for His fellowship, and recognizing our need for Him. Seeking the Lord requires humility, surrender, and a genuine hunger for spiritual growth.

The call to seek “his strength” refers to God’s power, might, and support. This goes beyond physical strength to encompass the spiritual strength that God provides to His people, especially in times of challenges and difficulties. When we seek God, we tap into His divine strength. Through Him, we find the courage and endurance to face life’s challenges. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and it enables us to accomplish what seems impossible in our own strength.

The second exhortation is to “seek his face evermore.” This is a call for continual, persistent seeking. The Hebrew parallelism emphasizes that seeking God is not a one-time event but a lifestyle of ongoing dependence and communion. The phrase “his face” signifies His presence. The command to seek His face “evermore” or “continually” stresses the importance of persistent, ongoing pursuit of God’s presence, not just in times of crisis but as a constant posture of the heart.

  • Prioritize seeking God: Make seeking God a top priority in your life. Set aside time for prayer, Bible reading, and worship. Cultivate a daily habit of seeking His presence and aligning your will with His.

  • Seek strength from God: Recognize your own limitations and rely on God’s strength. In times of difficulty, turn to Him for help and trust that He will provide the necessary strength to overcome challenges. Seek His wisdom and guidance in making decisions.

  • Seek intimacy with God: Deepen your relationship with God by seeking to know Him more. Read and meditate on His Word to understand His character and His ways. Spend time in prayer, pouring out your heart and listening to His voice. Seek to experience His presence in your life and allow Him to transform you from the inside out.

  • Seek God continually: Seek the Lord not only during times of crisis or need but as a consistent lifestyle. Seek Him in times of joy, gratitude, and everyday life. Seek Him in all circumstances, and let your pursuit of Him be a lifelong commitment.

This verse is a practical call for believers to actively and continually pursue God’s presence and power. It is grounded in the assurance of His faithfulness as demonstrated throughout Israel’s history. Seeking God’s face evermore means making Him the center of our lives, not just in moments of need but in every season. As we seek Him, we find strength and grace for each day.
