Psalms 105:3
Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
Psalms 105:3 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 105 is a psalm of thanksgiving that recalls God’s wondrous works and His faithfulness to Israel. The psalmist calls the people to remember what the Lord has done and to respond with praise. This verse stands in a song of joy, inviting the whole community to honor God together.
Meaning
“Glory ye in his holy name” means to boast or take delight in who God is. In the Bible, a name reveals a person’s character. God’s name is holy, set apart, pure, and majestic. To glory in it is to recognize His greatness and to proclaim His worthiness openly. This is not empty pride but a joyful, humble acknowledgment of His majesty.
The second part, “let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord,” links joy with the active pursuit of God. Seeking the Lord means earnestly desiring His presence, guidance, and wisdom. It involves prayer, reading His Word, and obeying His commands. The heart is the center of the inner person, so this rejoicing is deep and genuine, not merely outward. Even when God seems hidden, those who seek Him can rejoice because He is faithful.
This joy is both a command and a promise. As we glory in God’s name, our hearts are filled with gladness. Those who seek Him find Him, and that discovery brings lasting joy, even in difficult times. The plural forms “ye” and “them” remind us that this is a shared call for all God’s people.
Biblical connections
This verse has a close parallel in 1 Chronicles 16:10, part of David’s song when the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem. That connection shows that praising God’s holy name was central to worship from early in Israel’s history. The call to seek the Lord also appears in Matthew 6:33, where Jesus teaches His followers to seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness, promising that God will provide for them. In Christ, believers are called by His name and can glory in Him.
Application
We can give glory to God by praising Him in worship and by living in a way that reflects His character. Our speech and daily actions should honor His holy name. We can also rejoice in seeking the Lord, approaching our relationship with Him with gratitude and expectation, knowing that He desires to reveal Himself to us. Make it a habit to glory in His name and to cultivate a heart that rejoices in the pursuit of God.
Reflection
Where do we find our deepest joy? This verse invites us to make the Lord our greatest treasure. When we boast in Him and seek Him wholeheartedly, our hearts rejoice with a joy that circumstances cannot destroy.
