2 Chronicles 9:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel; his cupbearers also, and their apparel; and his ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.”

This verse is part of the account that describes the visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon. Sheba was a wealthy and powerful queen who had heard of Solomon’s wisdom and prosperity. In 2 Chronicles 9, she visits Solomon to test him with difficult questions and to see his kingdom for herself.

Context: Let’s break down the verse and explore its significance within the broader context:

“And the meat of his table”:This phrase refers to the abundance and opulence of King Solomon’s table. It highlights the wealth and prosperity of his kingdom. Solomon’s table was filled with an abundance of food, demonstrating the blessings God had bestowed upon him.

“And the sitting of his servants”:This phrase points to the organization and orderliness of Solomon’s court. It highlights the hierarchical structure, with his servants having designated places or positions around the table. This arrangement reflects the wisdom and management of Solomon’s kingdom.

“And the attendance of his ministers”:This phrase emphasizes the presence and dedication of Solomon’s ministers. They were responsible for serving him and ensuring the smooth functioning of his kingdom. Their presence signifies the support system that supported Solomon’s reign.

“And their apparel”:This phrase refers to the attire or clothing of Solomon’s servants and ministers. It suggests that they were dressed in fine garments, befitting their positions and the grandeur of the court.

“His cupbearers also, and their apparel”:The cupbearers were responsible for serving the king wine, ensuring its quality and safety. This verse mentions their apparel as also, highlighting the attention to detail in Solomon’s court, even in the clothing of those with specific roles.

“And his ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD”:This phrase refers to the grand entrance or staircase that Solomon used to go up to the house of the Lord, likely the temple he built in Jerusalem. This description underscores the majestic nature of the structure and the reverence Solomon had for the Lord.

“There was no more spirit in her”:This phrase concludes the verse and refers to the Queen of Sheba’s reaction. She was overwhelmed and astonished by what she saw in Solomon’s kingdom. The magnificence and wisdom she witnessed left her breathless and in awe.

In this verse, we see the demonstration of Solomon’s prosperity, wisdom, and orderliness. The Queen of Sheba was greatly impressed by the abundance and grandeur of Solomon’s kingdom, as well as the wisdom displayed in his court. This encounter serves as a testimony to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to Solomon (1 Kings 3:13) and highlights Solomon’s dedication to the Lord.
