Psalms 99:6
Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.
Psalms 99:6 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 99 praises the Lord as King and declares His holiness. The psalm calls the nations to worship Him because He reigns in righteousness. Verse 6 sits within this setting, showing that the holy God answers the prayers of His people. The verse names Moses, Aaron, and Samuel as examples of faithful servants who called upon the Lord and were heard.
Meaning
Moses and Aaron are called “his priests.” Moses served as prophet, lawgiver, and intercessor, and he spoke with God face to face (Exodus 33:11). Aaron, his brother, was the first high priest, offering sacrifices and representing the people before God. Samuel, a prophet and judge, is placed “among them that call upon his name.” Each of these leaders prayed, and God answered them. Though their duties differed, they were united in prayer and received divine response. Their different roles show that God responds to all who sincerely seek Him.
Biblical connections
The verse points to the priestly work of Christ, the ultimate High Priest. He intercedes for His people and surpasses the roles of Moses and Aaron. The psalmist recalls these leaders to show that God’s faithfulness continues across generations. Their prayers were not in vain, and neither are the prayers of believers today. This continuity encourages us to trust that God remains attentive to His people.
Application
Believers are encouraged to call upon the Lord with the same confidence. God is attentive to the cries of His people, just as He was to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel. Prayer is not reserved for special leaders; it is the privilege of every believer. Intercessory prayer for family, church, and community remains vital. The examples of these servants remind us that God hears and answers those who trust Him. We can persist in prayer, knowing that God listens to sincere cries.
Reflection
Consider the faithfulness of God in your own life. He has answered prayers in the past and will continue to do so. Let the testimony of these leaders strengthen your resolve to pray without ceasing. Their God is your God, and He is ready to hear you.
